P38A Diesel Head Gasket Replacement

Morning All,

I did buy a UV dye for the diesel leak but didn't have to use as found cause of the leak so I could use that. Done a sniff gas on the coolant and showed exhaust gases in coolant but I don't think these can ever be 100% reliable.

The water pump seized so I renewed that with new one and new belt etc.

I will do the marble test see how get on with that first as this wont help regardless if got a cracked head or gasket.

If the rad is bust am I better off buying an original rad as someone told me the aluminium ones were supposed to be better at cooling?

Thanks,
The Nissens RAd seems good.

Many go straight for Nissens.
I bought an OE to replace the original - doing it bit by bit - then my pump blew and smashed the new rad to bits.
I now have a s**tpart one as I couldn’t afford another OE and cooling system on the doozle is a very effective one if it’s all okay. Don’t expect it to last 20years but seems okay just bit fragile compared to original

I marble tested all before fitment to be sure it had one to begin with. Without one the water doesn’t go down through the rad and cool but straight across the top and back in

The cooling system on the diesel is crap with inflow and outflow both at the top of the RAD.

If you are going to the extent of removing the radiator then no doubt the fan, cowling and hoses will be coming off, therefore you are almost halfway to dismantling to take the head off.
The head can be lifted easily by hand if you remove the manifolds, but get all your tools ready before you start. eBay has all the tools just need to search and compare LR part numbers. Then before doing anything further, get the head checked at an engine/ engineering firm, they can check for leaks or cracks. Mine cost around £60 for the test and best money spent. Again eBay has replacement heads if needed(there is a guy in Birmingham selling rebuilt heads with cams and valves for around £300 to £400. Good quality finish and work a treat.) After that it's how much you want to spend, around £1k will get all the bits and tools for a complete build if you have nothing to start with. BUT..!! Get everything together first, some items are hard to come across and you don't want to be stuck on a Sunday afternoon missing a bolt. Go for it...

Thank you all for you kind advice.

I however had a nightmare with the RR today it started losing power and seemed like no diesel going to injectors the pump in engine can hear it working but undone inject feed but nothing was pumping. Car then would start then cut out immediately. Had to after 5 hours get it towed home.

Can anyone help me with where to start please?

Start a new thread, chap. And while you're doing it take the fuel filter off, put an ice-cream tub underneath and turn the ignition on or bridge the relay to the fuel pump. Is there fuel pumping up from the lift-pump?

Hope you fitted fuse 11 before towing.

Thanks mate will do. It only pumped once. Luckily recovery firm lifted onto flat bed so no towing involved.

I will do new thread.
