Diesel engine additive.

Good morning all. Just wanted to as a question. My brother has a 2.0 TD 4 as I do. He keeps telling me about an additive called Archoil and how good he thinks it is. I remember ( all those years ago) when Slick 50 came out and I also recall reports saying it rotted engine seals. Just wondered if anyone had any experience/ opinions re this Archoil stuff. Part of me thinks to leave well alone as engine is running fine anyway. Thanks in advance.

I'd avoid such snake oils, and use decent 5w40 synthetic oil.

It’s like the ongoing discussion over blanking the EGR valve or not. Mines open and engine works fine. Just fitted the crankcase breather filter mod so all good in that area Filter element I removed was badly oiled up . Had a result as got the mod with seals for a fiver as seller had bought in error.

Additives worthless? Agreed. Re the filter mod def made a difference as had a little bit of blue smoke on start up that’s now disappeared.

If you have the cyclone crankcase filter, then it's sensible to fit the EGR blank kit. The cyclone passes much more oil than the fluffy filter, so the extra oil causes manifold fouling much faster.
It's best to fit the EGR blanking mod, and remove and clean out the already accumulated goop from the inlet manifold. Once it's all clean, and the EGR mod is fitted, there will only be oil in the intake system, but no more black good will build up.

I was under the impression many additives are snake oil but a rare few, Liqui Moly and Comma D-tox, do have positive, noticeable results?

I know how strange this sounds but read on and giggle.
Met a fellow whilst filling up my last car (Saab convertible TID ) at a bp station who was putting an additive into his tank. When I asked him what it was as I’d tried most of Halfords best he advised he was an engineer working at a tech college. He’d researched all the products on the market and found this one to be the best.

He was putting it into a BMW 320d. He said you put in one millilitre for each litre of diesel and it completely cleans the engine, DPF/ CAT, turbo, injectors the works.

I’m literally just about to ask the zone if anyone has used this product on a Land Rover?

To be fair he said it’s worked very well in his BMW engine and I’m wondering if there is any experience within the group.
I’ve just acquired a 51 plate freelander under 100k fsh still on FWD so far everything works.
I’m thinking of using this additive as I do short trips in my cars.

At a concentration of 0.1%, I can't see any cleaning product doing anything worthwhile.
Now I have used Comma Diesel Magic many times, and it does work to a degree, especially where keeping injectors spraying correctly. However Diesel Magic needs to be in concentrations of about 10% to work effectively.
As for a fuel system treatment cleaning through the exhaust tract, this is unlikely, as these products are simply burnt off in normal combustion. The best way to clean the exhaust tract of a diesel is to run the engine for a couple of hours at higher power levels, as this burns off accumulated soot.
