Hi all after owning my landrover defender TD5 a month or so I'm really liking it, but as I suppected owning a Land Rover would require me to invest some money on it. I got it quite cheap probably £2+ k cheaper than some are making but it has high mileage nearly 200k, but I am willing in the near future to spend some money on it, the latest issue I've become a bit paranoid about id the diesel clatter engine noise, it's at lower revs and worse when cold and when I'm say drive 30ish in town.
Ive read a lot of things it could be from injector loom (doubtful as its firing correctly) injector adjustment or the expensive one new injectors. It's not really bad but after trying to listen to ones on YouTube they sound quieter but it hard to hear properly through videos, so my main question is from your experience what the most likely thing it could be? Also if it was injectors is there a cheaper way than buying new, like getting mine reconditioned?. My plan was always to work my way through the defender and replace what needs doing mechanically, when that's done sort out the cosmetic bits than the added extras, it will certainty be a working progress, but I'm liking it and plan to keep it a very long time. Thanks in advance.

You could check the adjustment on the injectors. Does not take long.

Not sure on injector refurbishment on the TD5's mine sounds OK..But, I had my 300tdi ones done by Bob Becks his number is 01926 888110

Might be worth a call.

Cheers

I don't know the TD5 engine - but - has it had a recent oil change, is the oil correct grade? I'm thinking low oil pressure causing valve & lifter clatter. Worth getting the oil pressure checked?

id check front crank pulley/damper isnt worn, ie have movement between the outer pulley and nut

They can clatter a fair bit when cold, but try an oil change as suggested above, l would suggest 5w/40 oil due to the high mileage on the engine.
Hi yes I read something about the td5 clattering when cold due to having only 4 glow plugs, but I agree an oil change is the best thing to start with as I had no service history with it so I have now idea when it was last done. But if it did happen to be injectors,do you know if secondhand one can just be fitted or do they have to be coded? Thanks for your help.

Hi the oil does acually look a bit black and thin, I'll pop to my local garage and get some, I think that's the best place to start, thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep the number to enquire about injectors, if other things don't improve the noise. I plan to do a lot to the Land Rover but just want to sort the basics out first, thanks for your help.

Do a search on this forum to establish the correct grade of oil and suitability for your engine. Plenty of oil freds on 'ere. And don't forget to change the oil filter. I would guess a least a semi synthetic? preferably full synthetic.

I think it's 5w40 oil as someone mentioned above, hopefully it improves it but I'm tempted to do the injector adjustments as well. But I need to find time and a decent spell of whether, thanks

engine gets smoother when warm
Hi yes, it clatters worse for the first 30 or so seconds of driving, but even when warmed up at slower speeds when you accelerate slower it still has that distinctive diesel noise which I think is a bit loader than it should be. I might be a bit paranoid what I'd like to do is hear another td5 and compare it, that would give me a lot of answers.

Make sure you change both oil filters as well.
Hi yes I've got filters a oil today, I'll get it done as soon as I have a minute, I noticed today it get much quiter when the tempature gets up to a third on the gauge that's where it tends to sit, but being quite cold it's taking longer to get there. But oil service will be my first job then I shall probably adjust the injectors then if I'm still not happy I'll see if I can get my injectors reconditioned, it's done a lot of miles so they probably could do with a recon. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi my td5 used to clatter for years then I had manifold skimmed and dewebbed and was as quite as a mouse from then on until I sold her

Best of luck

It’s easy to get paranoid....l was the worst at it.
Change the oil and filters, use 5w/40.

Don’t worry about the injectors etc unless it’s still bad after the oil change. Both our TD5’s are noisy when stone cold but are quieter when warm.
My 110 seems noisier than the missus’s 90 and hers has done 30,000 more miles.

Thanks that's reassuring, I'll get the oil done than I'll see, I run older vehicles and they all have there little issues, so it's easy to forget about one problem when another arises. Currently my Ford Focus has an engine on a pallet wait to be put in it, as the old one had a blocked oil strainer and that destroyed the engine. Loads to keep me busy but it's to cold to repair then at this moment in time. Thanks again for your help.

but it's to cold to repair then at this moment in time.
I know what you mean, replaced the brake discs and pads on my daughters KA yesterday working on the driveway. Water dripping off the car froze on the drive. Froze my nuts off and I don't mean the wheel nuts .

I can tell you as far as mileage is concerned on a Td5 engine it means nothing... some are knackered at 60k and some are tip top at three times that mileage
