i just bought a serie's 3 sixpot,with a serie's 2 bulkhead and front.
the engine was busted, chassis seems to be in good nick, been patched
but no holes.we had to tow it from saxthorpe to harwich and from hoek
van holland to home.
the tub is in bad condition, but it's wurth to repair.
i know the engine's bad reputation, is there a online manual for the
engine(rebuild manual's for sixpot, 4cylinderspetrol and diesel)?
and there was a plate of"sturgess of leicester" on the back,
is there a way to look up the chassis number (dvla)?
cheers,
Arjan

You need the "factory" workshop manual for the engine, the 6-cylinder
is not covered in the Haynes manual - though there is enough info in
Lindsay Porters "Series Restoration Manual" to do the job.

The 6-cylinder is a nice, if a tad thirsty, engine. I've always
regretted selling mine. It's reputation is rather unjustifed, it
doesn't give sparking performance but has a lot more grunt than
the figures suggest.

It is a nicer engine to drive than the 2.25, and gives that little bit
extra that a series landrover always seems to need, but it has a major
drawback - it is a long-stroke engine and revs far too high when in
use on the open road, with the result that it has a disctinct tendancy
to wear out/burst/overheat. A nice engine, but unsuitable for the
landrover and it's low gearing.

There is an online manual for the six-pot here

http://www.landrover.ee/est/files/manuals/engine/6Cil.pdf

but some parts for the six can be expensive, as they are no longer
readily available.

never really understood why they didn't just use the 3-litre version though
- must be the typical land rover underpowering ethos.

Probably, same as why they used a single stromberg on the Landrover
2.6 instead of the twin SU's used on the Rover version. It'd still be
too low geared for the engine anyway.

thanks for the manual,
now i can start the looking surgerie,
to find out if it's a main bearing or a big end bearing that is shot.
i have the material to restore the rear tub,
i might take it to driffield this year,
if i get it done (the same time i have 6 other projects)
cheers,
arjan

They did for the North American version, though whether it "worked"
or not I can't remember.

ebay is a sure bet though... 2 x 2.6 6 pots £10.51 for JLO.

Reaching the parts other Landrover restorers can't reach - JLo makes new
home in the USA.
Percy IIa - two Engines to the mile, awaits a new chassis.

Probably the best bet for spares, there's plenty of them being taken
out (i wonder why?) and could save you a mint on buying a NOS exhaust
manifold, for example.
