There were some replacement gauzes for the pick up pipe reasonably priced on Ebay recently - you solder it onto the end of the pipe. New pick up pipes are silly money.

Is there a gauze above the seal ring on the sediment bowl?

I'll have a look for one later this evening, ta!

Yes the pump did have a gauze and it was pretty clean, what dirt there was was lying at the bottom of the glass bowl.

I mentioned the overhaul kit not being any use, and that's because it was genuine and the old pump is not. In fact it doesn't look very old and also exactly like the Bearmach one I've just fitted. If this has fixed it then I'll have a look at the two valves and see if they were working. Diaphragm looked OK.

Pipes were mainly rigid pvc with rubber couplings. The high pressure one snapped easily at one point, but as I said earlier, there wasn't any leaking. Low pressure side all looked fine .

There are some gauzes for sale now - ebay item 132576973813

I have no connection with the seller, otrher than as a customer
Brilliant, thanks, I've ordered one.

Did you have to cut anything off the pickup tube? It may be an optical illusion, but mine looks awfully close to the bottom of the tank?

The car is now running beautifully. Completely transformed, not only with the two faults gone, but the new jet and needles make it sound 'crisper' with a much sweeter exhaust note. And bags of torque.

No, you don't need to cut the tube. Originally, there would have been a gauze there - it's just rotted or vibrated itself to bits over the years, and disappeared.

If you look carefully at your pick up tube, you'll probably find a "collar" where the old solder was, holding the top of the original gauze in place.

The gauze fits so far up the pipe that it doesn't make the pipe more than a couple of mm longer overall.

That's odd, I had the tube out today to check it and didn't notice a collar. Anyway, good - the last thing it needs is an effectively smaller tank. Thanks again.
