DHSE Fogs? Should they be there?

I'm sure I read on here a few weeks back a thread which suggested that the DHSE shouldn't have front fogs due to the fog blocking the air flow to a radiator/cooler? Am I right or have I gone mad? Looking at them there is a mixture of some with and some without and a grill in place of them, if they have had them fitted should there be an alternative route for the air to get to the radiator/cooler?

If it's a diesel AUTO the fog lights should not be fitted as the nearside one obscures the AUTO box oil cooler. Maybe not a problem as some say in cool weather, but start towing in summer or serious off roading and the box will cook.

As Data says they should not be fitted. Service bulletin dated i think 25/10/95 says they should not be fitted to BMW diesel variants. However i have them on mine, no problems up to now. There is some air flow to cooler so for normal driving as long as you don't do any towing they should be ok. Just ensure the cooler is not clogged up with crap. If you are going to be towing i suggest you remove them.

whats the best way to clean the cooler? was underneath mine checking for anything wrong and noticed its pretty grubby, how about spraying some engine junk and jet washing???

yeah thats what i was worrying about! dont want to find a weak spot and punch a hole threw it!!!!

Directing a 1750 psi water jet at something like an aluminium matrix which after a few years of use possibly has the same strength as Turkey foil is not a good idea. If it's oily crap, a paint brush, a bit of paraffin with a touch of Gunk added to make it water soluble, then a gentle rinse with the water jet turned down to minimum. Followed by a gentle blow off with an air line is a lot kinder.
