Hi.
Just to re-introduce myself. i was an active member on this site a good few years back. I then had surgery and put my trusted P38 2.5 bmw into the back of my workshop and there it stayed for 5 years.
Well, ive just got the old girl back on the road.
In the last couple of weeks she has had new brake pipes, new disk and pads all round, compressor rebuild, EGR removal pipe, battery, oil service, new oil cooler pipe (and because they were seized and oil cooler too...) and four new boots too.
Then went through an MOT, and the drive to the MOT station a terrible rattle started from the front end.
At first it was though to be the tensioner pulley as could see slight vibration in the tensioner arm.
This was replaced and hasnt cured the problem.

While the belt was off i noticed the bottom crank pulley has some play and i can make it clunk with my hand,

I am looking at replacing this, how easy is it to replace? any special tools?
I have read an old thread on here but not actually sure what the guy replaced as it looks like he pressed out the internals of the original.

Does anyone know how to, or has replaced one before who knows whats involved??
Any help would be greatly appreciated, needing my car and running out of money so taking it to a garage is not really doable.

Thanks in advance guys

This was covered a while ago I cant remember if its two piece or not but if you do have to take the hole pulley of it is done up bloody tight and has to be torqued up to some silly amount as it runs the oil pump, hopefully @wammers will be along soon his is the diesel Yoda.

Thanks brianp38dse. I tried a search but not sure if the hub nut had to be removed or if the torsion pulley can be unbolted from the rear flange and removed without having to disturb the crazy tight nut?

yeah but i dont think im that lucky!
I could really do with doing this at the weekend as need my car asap but want to know what im letting myself in for

I'm not sure, but if it is at all similar to the Discovery one then its a bugger. What has happened is that the bond between the rubber and the pulley has come apart. Take the belt off, remove the fan and put a sheet of cardboard down behind the radiator to protect it. Undoing the front bit uncovers the rubber that should be bonded to inner and outer parts of the pulley. You will be able to see what is making it rattle. Now this is a bodge, but it could work (it did on our Discovery!) Clean it all up as thouroughly as you can and the run a generous bead of superglue around the entire circumference of where the rubber has come detached. Make sure that the inner and outer parts are in correct positions before glueing! This is definately worth trying before trying to undo crank nut. Good luck.

Wammers is correct. Loosen vc fan, remove serp belt, remove vc fan, loosen bolts n remove dampner and replace with new or used part. Very simple job.

Thanks for the replies guys!
I was hoping it was an easy replacement. I can view all the posts while at work but IT won't allow login into any forums otherwise I'd have said thanks earlier.! Will let you all know how I get on at the weekend
