Im wanting to fit a Detroit Locker to a salisbury rear axle, but cant find any info on how to adjust the backlash or pre load, i've spoke with Ashcroft transmissions who are not willing to fit one for me as they dont have any experience of them, so is there anyone on here who can explain what backlash and pre load are and how you adjust them,

i can help you ,preload of pinion is determined by rolling resistance of pinion, achieved a crushing spacer between brgs, preload of diff carrier is determined by shimming behind brgs on diff carrier ,and backlash ( freeplay between pinion teeth and crownwheel teeth )by moving shims between brgs ,you dont need spreader tool to set salisbury diff ,but you will need home made tool to hold drive flange whilst tigthening pinion nut could give you exact data tomorrow

Well thats cleared that up then :confused::confused: all gobbldy gook to me

well how simple do you say it , its difficult if youve built alot its not easy to see that everbody else wouldnt understand,

thanks for that, it does sound complicated, is it as difficult as it sounds? and what does the home made tool look like, thanks

i presume you will leave pinion as is as you dont need to touch it to fit diff carrier,so you will be left setting preload on diff carrier brgs .127mm or 5 thou ,that is the diff carrier with brgs on would be 5 thou wider than the casing , shims are fitted behind grs to achiev e this ,when carrier is fitted shims behind brgs may need swapping from one side to another to put crown wheel in a position where the free play (backlash) between crown wheel and pinion is .15 to .27 mm or 6 to 10 thou measured of crown wheel tooth ,tool is for holding drive flange while undoing or tightening pinion nut ,which is just 6ft bar with 2 x bolt welded on to hold flange usually necessary if doing pinion seal or brgs, with some new diff carriers you can get away with just swapping brgs and shims and refitting on new diff as they were on old and they would be okay ,but you cant guarrenty it and if its out diff life will be shortened ,you would need snap on or such quality pullers to remove brgs without damage which is hardest bit off job

hi James you dont fancy overseeing installation of the locker do you? im willing to pay as the more i delph into it the worse it sounds, lol
