Thought people might be interested to see these, not just the hole but the casing is all cracked around the bolt holes as well. The wife did say it made quite a bang when it went.

Ouch, that looks expensive!

It wasn't overly cheap, parts came in at 630 , (vcu, ird, bearings and diff mounts), labour was 220

have you put any new tyres on it? and if you did where did you put them?

I had put part worns on the front as the rears wear quite good.

I've just had a new falken fitted to the rear to match the new falken that was on the back door and now also on the rear. the 2 falkens that where on the rear with 4-5mm left are now on the front so all 4 match

Thanks for the pic's. Sad news that. Do you still have the ird? They're scrap normally when this happens. If you still have it could you take it apart to see what's damaged/happening inside?

might be something simple broken and fell into the crownwheel and pinion and fired out the casing.
i have just had to change a vw gearbox after a selector pin broke and fell into the diff with similar results.....also had a pug 306 throw a bearing and the bits were fired out the casing into the clutch housing ...ouch...

Jeepers, how did that happen???

Not sure, might have been caused by mismatched tyres. What ever caused it , it happened quickly it felt tight when the wife reversed off the drive and blew less than 2 miles later

Sorry already scrapped it, it was stinking the boot out with a horrible oily smell.

There seemed to be lots of swarf and particles of metal inside it. Not only did it blow the hole in it but the casting around the bolts near where the prop attached was all cracked, must have been some force.
