Need to find this 1997 DSE Auto urgently ! It,s a LHD Portuguese Reg
graphite grey metallic P38 Vin No.SALLPAMW4WA377873.
(may have been re-registered by now) I sold it to the LHD Place in Basingstoke and they sold it on with Portuguese Plates and still in my name !!!!
Apparently it was involved in a hit and run in Madrid a while back - after I sold it I hasten to add.
Need to sort the registration out so if anyone knows the car I,d be most grateful to hear anything about it.

just got a letter last week about a mondeo i sold that had been in a hit and run with a off duty copper and am getting the stick fer it!!! log book was sent off and all that in his name but the DVLA have no records of it. am half way to tracking the lad down now and he let slip that he is best mates with a girl further up the rd, she is defending him though so i just past her details on.
why dont you get in touch with this place in basingstoke as they should ahve it on there books if its a properly run, as a trader the car does not have to go into there name you see so it would have stayed in yours untill the sale but they should have made sure it was transfered. just give the name of the palce to your solicitor and let them deal with it.

You are absolutely right - the car should have been re registered in the new owners name but they didn,t do that.
They gave me the name of the bloke that they sold it to, but he seems to have disappeared off the planet ! No address, phone or police records of him or the car !
Main problem is that here in Portugal the road tax rules have changed and the registered keeper of the car is automatically billed every year for the tax so unless I can prove that the car is either re registered in another country or scrapped, I,ll be paying road tax forever !!!!!
Looks like it is going to go down the legal route but that,s always a pain and ends up expensive

I take it you have a bill of sale from the person you sold it to in England.
They themselves must also have a record .
I don't know how it works in your country ,but don't you have to notify the relevant authority that you are no longer the registered owner etc ?

Just a question , you are Portugese and you sell a car with Portugese reg in England , why ???, prices overhere are much higher than in England , you could have saved yourself a nice holliday and a car by selling it in Portugal but whatever , originaly i'm from Holland and overthere you can track a owner down thru the insurance company's , not sure how that works here but if you want i could ask around for you , also the anual IPOH could give you a place to start looking , i asume your familie stil lives here , maybe they could ask at IPOH ( it's by reg and not by owner).

Just ideas.

You are right about car prices in Portugal but that wasn,t always the case.
4x4 vehicles used to have a tax loophole and P38,s were over 10k cheaper in Portugal (1998-9) That,s all changed now - unfortunately! Used values were similar in UK.
Anyway the DVG in Portugal have told me the car hasn,t been taxed or tested - in Portugal - since I sold it so I guess it,s not in Portugal. Probably in Spain. Would be grateful for any assistance you can give.

Get legal help straight away before the person who is now driving it kills somone and you get the blame for that as well.
I part exchanged a car (Saab) years ago and was haunted by it for ages with parking & speeding fines that took ages to sort out each time.
In the end I got a knock at the door one day - the Police had come to arrest me for a serious offence / crime involving the car.
I managed, after a while, to convince them that it had been part exchanged with a dealer but still got a formal caution for registration irregularites.

I will call some people i know overhere on monday and see what they advice , one is a friend of me and has 13 drivingschools and is owner of a IPOH station so maybe he can help me , i'm not promissing anything but i will see what i can do.
Furthermore i think paulhumphries is right , go to a lawyer and see what he has to say , if anything , but when the **** hits the fan you can proof you were busy get things sorted out , also go to the police and let them write a statement or something wich will help you prove your case in a court ( if necesary ) , because like other people already mentioned , if they make a hit and run or kill somebody you will have a hard time solving that one out although you are probebly able to proof that you are/were in England at the time , don't know exactly how the law in England works but as owner they could hold you responsible , but lets not get to negative here , be smart and listen to what is said and cover yourself for all eventualities.
If the car is in Spain you have a serious problem finding it but i know we have some people from spain on the board , maybe they are willing to ask around overthere.
I wil let you know when i find something.

Yup, I,ve been in touch with the UK Police and the Euro Consumer Complaints people so my queries will be on record.
Would be great if you could find out anything at all.
Thanks a lot.

Certainly a warning to ALL of us to get that paperwork right. I was luckier than you but could have been caught - I used to have a Freeloader on lease, and at the end of the three years I took it back to the dealer and dumped it with them, with all the paperwork. They never informed DVLA, and BMW leasing (as it then was) lost the paperwork and dumped the car in a field for two years. One day I get a phone call out of the blue from a dealer - he's bought the car and found a buyer, but can't get any paperwork as it's in my name. Only one thing we could do - I applied for a duplicate logbook and he sent a courier for it, then passed it on (and this time, I sent the slip to DVLA myself). They are now getting quite hot on chasing parking fines, congestion charge etc, so you must de-register. If worried, send it Special Delivery, and keep all receipts etc.
