I would like to bring something to your attention and would like to put members of the general public on alert.
I am an owner of a black county station wagon 110 Defender long wheel base Land Rover, vehicle registration AK09FZN.
On the 26/11/2019 between 8:35am and 9:30am my vehicle was parked on my driveway. During this time I was at work. My parents were the only people at home. My mother heard a noise, which she presumed was a construction noise since there are construction works being carried out in the field adjacent to our home. She ignored this noise.
It transpired that a few people (possibly 2 or 3), came onto or private property and broke into my locked vehicle. They then proceeded to drive away with my vehicle. We reported the matter to the police who assigned us a crime number.
Having spoken to PC Snowdon of West Yorkshire police, we were advised that due to the "lack of resources”, they are not able to assist in making a full enquiry into this theft, nor do they have officers that can provide support or question the building workers or people in the area. No one has attended our property to take statements; or attended local properties to see if there are any witnesses etc. It took 2 days for the officer to get in touch with me despite repeated requests. When he was finally able to get in touch, there was no empathy and no support. Every suggestion that I made for recovery/ investigation was dismissed. The vehicle was picked up by one of their cameras but no further follow up was done. The impression provided was that they are not interested in this vehicle and will not make linked investigations into the other vehicles that have been stolen. They may be aware of who the perpetrators are. They are simply waiting for the local cameras to pick up the vehicle registration but openly admit that false plates would have been put on the vehicle. When I asked if they could search for images just based on the description of the vehicle, I was advised that they work on the vehicle registration only. They do not have the equipment to check all cameras in the area.
Through our own research as a family, we were able to ascertain that 12 Land Rover Defenders have been appropriated in this area in the last few days. Our vehicle is worth approximately £25,000 possibly more as we have carried out extra work on the car. This means that just in the last few days alone circa £300,000 worth of vehicles have been stolen to order.
We are also making enquiries of the members of the public and through the assistance of the local community and residents in our neighbourhood, obtained CCTV footage which shows the vehicle being stolen. Unfortunately the police do not have the software to open the footage or enhance the same to make their investigation. Nor have they told us what format they would like the footage in.
Our vehicle has been sighted in the Elland/Halifax area. The investigation remains ongoing, however we have been informed that it will have limited success. We have been told today by a well-wisher that the vehicle was spotted going through Elland and Ainley Top towards Manchester. An engineer at a local garage has advised that stolen Land Rover vehicles are being shipped out of the country from Liverpool. He says that Elland is a hotspot for Defender thefts and they are usually left there for a couple of days, to make sure no trackers are on it before they drive to Liverpool.
The police have advised that any images of the driver or plates would assist them and they will also be relying heavily on the public. In light of the above, we would be grateful for any assistance in this regard.
Please see attached the images that we have been able to obtain from the neighbours so far. Would you be able to help us in getting the message out to people that these thefts are taking place and if they have seen our vehicle to report the same immediately? We have posted these images on social media and through Land Rover forums as well.
The vehicle has some distinctive features: roof rack, snorkel, red painted break calipers, front bumper was rusting so this has been painted with red oxide to stop this, bespoke general grabber-tyres, HAM radio system antenna, stained driver side window (not tinted) the spare wheel at the back which is attached to the boot door has a black and silver cover, chequered plates on top of the fenders on the bonnet and of the rear of the vehicle. There is also a bung cord over the passenger side rear door which has never come off.
We need your help. Any exposure in relation to this theft would assist us to either get the vehicle back or catch the offenders or at least prevent this from happening to others. I am deeply disappointed in our public service providers. They have openly dismissed my case and are not prepared to actively investigate this matter.
Please can you help us, we feel very isolated we don't know what else we can do.
I have a few ideas that would catch the thieves. please email me or reply to this post.
