Desirable or damage? Two hole gasket instead of one hole gasket.

I bought my head gasket ready for this weekend’s work, and got a two hole instead of a one hole gasket.

I wasn’t sure what size I needed at the counter (pressure of being under-informed at the parts shop!) so I went for ‘one higher’ than the one that came off.

Doing my duty and reading the manual again today I see that 2 hole and 3 hole are actually thinner?!

so dumb question can I save this gasket (very out of the packet and unreturnable) by using two hole over a one hole?

could I increase compression? :) or wreck my engine :(

Aha, I may be stupid

Thicker gaskets for greater piston protrusion. Am I reading this correctly? One hole (as removed) is the medium thickness and the 2 hole appears to be for minimum piston protrusion?

therefore a three hole or one hole should be okay but the two hole might be too thin?

Then if that is the case and the haynes is correct, I cannot see it written in the rave file for the td5.All it says is replace like for like.

the 2 hole is thinner and that surely is not a good thing.

sadly I reckon you are right - it’s the sensible option to get a like-for-like gasket.

you either measure piston protrusion and check valve stand down or fit the same as came off 2 is apparently the thinnest and if it wasnt thick enough would cause pistons to hit the valves

moving the valve stem seems slightly out of my wheelhouse. I’ve got some feeler gauges somewhere but I think I’m going to go for a thicker gasket.
