I bought my V reg TD5 quite cheaply last year, and since then the hill descent control has never worked.

Before I ask a mechanic to have a look at it, are there any simple checks I should make to try and fix it, or is it all too complicated for an amateur to attempt?

Bit of friendly advice, put a post in the introductory section, and put your tin hat on and be prepared to get some flak - just ignore it, it's a kind of initiation ceremony on here!!!!

I dont have the experience with my Disco 2 to help much, but if it was me I would check relevant fuses, but also get a fault reader on it. I have found that the switches are a bit flakey, switching on and off a few times will help. Also take the switch out of the dash and make sure the connections are intact.

At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, are you aware it should only work when low range is engaged and the speed is less than 50 kph............................

There are some very good folk on here, you will get better answers in due course!!!

Thanks very much to both of you...with a very red face I have to admit that I didn't rtfm, and I had no idea it only worked in low ratio. I had a Freelender a few year ago, which didn't have a low ratio box, and hence hdc worked when you pushed the button.

I will try it as soon as I get back from Sweden.

Thanks again...it was well worth joining the site!
