Hi, whats the best way to connect up a pair of work lights on the back of my 1985 defender? I have already fitted the lights to the vehicle but not sure where to feed the wires to, where to fit the relay & switch.. I thought about running the cable acroos the top of the windows (inside) in the guttering, through the headlining and down the LH A post, then between the windscreen wiper moter directly down to the fuse box????

Many thanks,
Alan

Sounds about right Alan. Make sure you have the right wireing and relays. I assume they are 55w bulbs? these will draw approx 10amp, so use 20 amp wire from the lamp to the relay, then you can use thinner wire to the switch. I think a fuse of 12.5 or 15amp is correct, but dont quote me on this.

Was going to use some 3core 240v mains cable off my pressure washer, looks pretty thick - will this be ok?? Do i just feed the 12v from the relay down the wire and pick up an earth abit nearer to the lights off the chassis???? Thought about sticking the switch to the right of the stering wheel just above the hazaed light / rear demister switch? Will this be ok?????

Many thanks,

Al

ffs - would yu use chocolate bars for disk pads?

pressure washer mains cable - give it to someone with at least another half a brain cell to do.

Was it you that did most of the wireing on my 110 that I've just spent the last two weeks trying to sort out?

I ask this because you seem to use the same materials!

Whats the different between using the cable off of my pressure washer (3 core with 13 amp plug) and buying a roll of cable to do the job?

Halfords - or Vehicle Wiring Products -
the wire you want is Thinwall 32/0.20mm, 1mm2. Use Green with brown tracer (denotes reversing light- which is closest yu get to work light) from switch to light.

1) what is the DC current rating?
2) it isnt designed for DC current.
3) What happens when yu have 12 different things all wired up using the same colour wire and you have to fault find?
4) what colour code will you use?

Either do the job properly or not at all.

See you what you mean, thanks for the advise. Do i pick up an earth near to the lights or take a new earth along with the live?

Cheers..

Take the hint mate, get someone to do it for you or get someone who knows what to do with you to teach you, good to see you want to have a ago but about the only quicker way of a fire is matchs and petrol.
Its a simple job but not done right bang goes the loom or worse your Landrover.

i think if the poor fella needs a hand then at least cant someone tell him what wire to use, at least he is having a go.

wot do yu think this was? Fairy Dust?

OK - will take it in somewhere to get this done properly - if i cant even do this myself, whats the point of buying an old landrover to do up?

No one said dont do it - just get someone local who soes know to gelp and oversee what yu are doing. There are a few peeps around Birmingham tgat might help if yu ask nicely.

Thanks, im just really keen on doing up this vehicle and learning on how to do it!!!

Think i need to make some contacts with folks in my area who can show me a thing or two!!
