After having a think today I was wondering what it would be like to leave out the tub cappings on my Defender rebuild. At around £60 per side to replace the rotten ones what do people think of not putting any one at all and with a small amount of filler/silicon stuff, filling in the gap between the station wagon side and the tub? It would certainly look different. Now yes the obviously give the sides a little bit of height but that could be sorted. What do people think?

What do you intend to bolt the sides onto? You cant just have the side hanging from the roof secured/joined with filler. The body cappings are not an optional extra they are part of the structure. You don't need galvanised cappings and can get a set for under £80. I got mine off Iannotts (a member on here) top quality and fitted them last year.

While you are on this economy drive, why dont you just use 1 screw where normally there are 4 thus saving 75% on screws alone.
You could also use washing up liquid in your gearbox and Yorkie Bars as brake pads.

Haha very funny guys! Yes they are obv part of the integral structure of the bodywork but I was just wondering if its ever been done before. It would sure look different which is what I was getting at more than the cost side of it.

Yep - it'd certainly look different. But if that was the goal, why not paint the bonnet pink, cover the roof in fake fur, and replace the doors with dolphins. :)

a nooooooooo glav one ?

Noooooo, I aint won the lottery. I'm using this other one I have got. Its been welded and new brake pipes, new leafs and axles have been done with new propshafts too. Just putting an extra coat of paint on it while its stripped down.:D
