the defender stud pattern is the same now as it has since the first series 1 i think you'll find.
it must be a late disco 2 or maybe a p38 RR bracket you have ;)

You guys are talking cross-purposes here. The wheel stud pattern has not changed for the entire 90/110/Defender etc. production history.

However the design of the rear wheel carrier has. Earlier models had this arrangement:

In 2002 when Land Rover made a number of updates to the Defender, mainly the dashboard layout, central locking, electric windows etc. etc., they also updated the rear door. The new door was a pressed steel frame, rather than the welded box section of the older style. The window was also rounded on all four corners and a rubber seal used to seal it.

The spare wheel carrier changed at the same time, to the same type as used on the Discovery before:

Here's the new style rear door (note window shape/seal) with the wheel carrier attached:

The later ones are prone to splitting, but the earlier doors are rubbish!

They are not interchangeable without modifying the interior frame of the door to fit the other type of carrier. It should be noted that if you happen to have obtained a Discovery II (ie. Td5) spare wheel bracket, which would look identical to that above, that would indeed have a different wheel stud pattern since Discoveries changed when the Disco II came in.

Thanks for sharing this. I have a 1997, see attached. How much of work is there to modify the interior frame to fit the newer model of spare wheel bracket? Or would you recommend to go with the older version as there's something on my door looking similar already? Also, are there different sizes depending on the wheel dimensions?
