Evening guys. I'm looking at adding a bigger fan to my Defender's heater box and doing away with the hot cold flap thing, but this means that it will be blowing air through the hot matrix all the time. I'm therefore thinking of adding a flow control to the hot water inlet pipe so that I can shut the water off on hot days and just have a cold fan blowing. However, when it's in the "Off" position there will be no water flow back to the engine.

Would this mess up the cooling system? Is the heater circuit also used as the engine's thermostat bypass circuit?

Thanks if anyone can assist.

Jonathan

What engine are you using? Series 2 1/4 engine used exactly the system you describe- shutting off the water rather than diverting the air. That same system could be fitted to a 12J or 19J engine using series parts.

Alternatively, you could fit a bypass valve to divert the water around the heater matrix and use that for temperature control.

It's a 200tdi engine. I'm fitting a slightly bigger heater matrix if I can make it fit which already has a flow valve that I was hoping to utilise.

A bypass valve would do the job though...

Thanks :)

you can block heater hose without any effect on the cooling system
