IN MY SHED
I recently won a Td5 rear tub off flea bay as my original one is in a bad way, as many of you are aware the fuel filler is on the rear of the TD5 but at the front on the earlier one
I wanted to ask would it be possible to swop the panel from my old tub onto the new tub ?

Dont see why not as long as its in good condition

Yeah, I do. That's why I'm getting a y shaped filler made for my dual tanks, rather than 2 fillers. I kind of hoped you would find out where to get longer fuel pipe from though!

has anyone done this yet as im still toying with the idea
or extending the fuel filler neck to reach the rear

To extend the filler it will need to go across the wheel arch, that's a fairly dubious idea guys. To fit a TD5 tub to an earlier vehicle you might want to look at a parts manual to see if the body mounting points are the same, as well as the seat belt mounts, seat box , sill bars and side panels not to mention door strike plates.

Tricky either way. You'll have a canny few spot welds to drill out and replace with pop rivets. You'll have to do the same on the other side too, to make it look the same.

dont really mind about not having the spot welds as long as the panel fits
it will be bonded on

Yeah, the pop rivets on my rear quarter panels seem to be ok. If you do go down that route you might find a few situations where the holes drilled out on your tub and those drilled out on the new wing side don't line up. Worst case is when they half overlap because the you'll end up having to elongate the hole on the tub and the pop rivet will not have a neat, tight hole to grip in to. I would be tempted to use araldite to bond with under the pop rivets. I used sikaflex and I'm not that happy with it. Time will tell though!

I wouldn't be keen to do that myself. Where the centre bulkhead fixes to it would be a worry as it provides rigidity. Also, the rear floor and inner wings sit across the chassis rails and the rear cross member, the side panels welded to the inner wings, then have the upper side walls and roof on top of them. It would mean that the weight of the upper sides and roof would largely be supported on that bonded line between the inner wing and side panel. The rear quarter panel would take some of that weight down to the rear chassis cross member, but it 'll be a fair bit of downward sheer force on that bond IMO.

good point
looks like i will be extending the fuel filler pipe from the side tank to the new filler point at the rear

Have you gone off the pop rivet idea? You could phone LRDirect and ask them if part RTC6283 would fit your tub. Having said that, my two new rear quarter panels took some fettling to fit.
I know nobber raised concerns about extending the fuel filler across the arch, but the current filler pipe is in the direct firing line from the tyre. I suppose the issue is if the axle, under articulation, would hit the filler pipe? You would need to run the pipe where the wheel wouldn't reach it.
