Defender td5 handbrake stuck on

Went to do a bit of fencing this morning and jumped in the defender and went to move her and the handbrake seems to be stuck on. The lever it’s self seems slightly tighter than usual although it got new discs on the rear for its m.o.t last week and has only done about 30 miles since. Anyone got any suggestions?

im not sure what new rear discs have to do with it as they are nothing to do with the hand brake on rear of transfer box, get a 17mm socket and ratchet and try the adjuster on front bottom of the back plate anti clock wise slackens brake off,if lever feels stiffer youd need to look at cable and shoes inside the drum

I had a sticking hand brake a few times, to get me out of a muddle I tapped the lever going into the drum (rear of gearbox) with a hammer to release the brake, but its just to get out of a pickle, not a fix. And I mean tap , not whack!

A common cause is mud and crud inside drum from off road use. Whacking drum a few times with hammer will release brake. To cure disconnect propshaft, remove drum, and clean inside it

You really need to strip the actuator out, clean, grease and reassemble.

Wasn’t sure how the handbrake setup worked on the Landy. Wired in about it tho and popped the prop shaft off and the outer drum and cleaned everything up and she’s good as new now! Got the fencing done! Cheers for the comments lads

I like to take the whole thing off the box, it's only 4 bolts and a clevis pin. You can strip it all down and clean/grease it up in comfort at the kitchen table
