My 2002 defender had been standing a while.
I got in to drive it and my clutch only got some bite right at the bottom
and I stalled it about 4 times.
I topped up the fluid and it got a bit better but only to a point where it
was drivable.

Any advice?

Regards John

Hi John

same thing happened to my 2002 defender - had to replace the clutch master
cylinder. Once I removed it you could see the fluid leaking out the back.
Replaced it and has not reoccurred.

This seems to be happening quite a lot on 2002/2003 vehicles.
Replacement does appear to be a proper fix.

Sounds familiar - Just had my 2003 TD5 cyclinder replaced for same reason
last month (failed on the way home). Seems there a real bugger to bleed
thouroughly too if the dealerships comments are anything to go by!

I did wonder if the failing cylinder was the reason for mine being a bit of
a **** to get into second first thing in the morning (dragging clutch).
Gear changes seemed a lot slicker after the master cylinder was replaced.
A few days of use though and its reverted back to being 'argumentative'when
cold. I'm guessing this is something of a trade of against the complexity
of the gearbox - or do I need to pursue this further ??
