Hi,
This is my first post here, although I have referred to the site regularly for advice.
I have owned my 2003 Double cab for 5 years and have used and abused it for general use and heavy towing.
It recently destroyed its transfer box and believing it may have also needed clutch, flywheel and gearbox, I have bit the bullet and bought damaged 2002 TD5 disco 2 auto with the plan to convert defender to auto.
I have fitted Disco engine with uprated Ashcroft torque converter and disco box which is now sitting in defender.
This was really straight forward with no special mountings required.
I changed disco engine loom with defender and connected to original defender ECU.
I have not connected any of the gearbox loom yet as my intention is to use Compushift stand alone ECU to run gearbox side.

I got to the point of starting engine today but came across this,
Turn ignition on - usual warning lights plus foglight warning light and indicator warning lights(start dim and get brighter) all come on - engine turns over but will not start.
This was a running engine before fitting to defender.
If anybody recognises these faults, I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks Phil

I believe there is a difference to do with the disco having a immobilizer or something, I think malcom whitbread had same thing.
If you check a fred on pirate4x4 by redlinemike called tubular chassisish build its discussed

I have almost finished, however during MOT today the gear selector cable fell out of the shifter. The plastic bush that fits over the ball end of the cable in the shifter is mangled and the retaining clip is missing. local landrover dealer want to sell me complete shifter.
Does anybody know where I can get these parts - They are from Disco2 2002 TD5.
Thanks

I'm planning to convert my td5 110 CSW to auto. Having priced up breaker parts vs. Ashcroft kit I've bought a write off Disco2 TD5 Auto as the donor vehicle.
To manage the costs the plan is
  • overhaul the box & fit the larger suffix 24 clutch plates
  • exchange purchase the Ashcroft large torque converter
  • use all the other parts from the discovery including the autobox ECU
  • After christmas replace the LR ecu with a compushift so as to be able to alter the box character when towing vs usual pootling
I recently replaced the Defender ECU with a new Land Rover replacement NNN500020 version, that [I believe] is the single replacement that LR offer for both Disco & Defender td5.

Has anyone done this conversion using the stock LR autobox ECU?

thanks
Chris
