Defender TD5 90 station wagon stereo upgrade

Hi all I have a 90 county stations wagon with CD player and four speakers as standard. Two in front dash and two in rear area near back door.

I was wondering though are there any direct swap upgrades I could purchase to improve my sound system.

I've heard the newer tdci uses alpine head unit which would be easy enough to fit but what about speakers.

I want some more powerful and better quality ones to combat the engine noise haha!

Direct swap would be good to save making mess.

Measure the diameter of the speakers and buy the most powerful of that size. Mudstuff do a enlarging ring aswell.

From experience, the best upgrade you can make is to raise the tweeters as I said in your other post.
If you really don't want to drill out that extra inch to allow 130mm speakers to fit then I would advise you get something like this Car Audio Equipment | Buy online at Car Audio Security and just ignore the speakers. Just use the crossover and tweeter and stick it on your dash. You can then save the speakers for some other time. (I'm sure you can buy cheaper component speakers but I know the crossover on these is only small and fits in the dash, plus the tweeter can be angled)

Hi mate somehow I missed your post I have just found it though! So best thing to do then is go for two 130mm front speakers using the spacers from mud uk?

What about the ones in the rear they are built in to landrovers own like speaker housing so I think I would have to stick to the same size with those? Or is there another way of easily adapting them to!

Do you have any suggestions on head units? I've heard of the new landies using alpine units. Ideally I want something my iPod phones etc can connect to either through aux or blue tooth. I love music though so wouldn't mind paying a little bit to get some good enjoyment from it!

After a bit more researching on the mud uk website i think that those 130mm shallow speaker rings you mentioned will also fit in the rear speaker consoles.

So in theory whatever speakers i fit in the front i could put in the back aswell.

I just need to find a powerful speaker now then that gives good sound quality aswell as power! Ill check the website you suggested mate

Kenwood KIV-700 - has a cable that plugs into your iphone/ipod 30 pin connector. Lets you control it via thr head unit. Excellent head unit and not too expensive.

If you want to add some bass those alll in one underseat subs are also excellent.

I shall check them out. Upon further investigation i have just discovered that i already have 130mm speakers and the speaker mounting rings already installed.

I also have 130mm speakers in the rear to.

So im assuming either all county station wagons came with these fitted from the factory or someone else decided to upgrade them before me.

In any case they actually seem pretty loud so i may just try getting a smart head unit first.

I love my upgrades though so if anyone can suggest a good speaker i may still consider fitting some aswell.

I'd definitely go ahead with changing the head unit for a start- it should be pretty much plug and play though you may need a wiring adaptor to match ISO plugs. Apart from anything else you'll then have an aux input and potentially DAB.

Speakers don't matter that much to an extent. It's the amount of power you pass too them that matters, and the enclosure type.

So the best thing to do is upgrade my headunit to an all singing and dancing one with 4x50w outputs for the four speakers and then if i make sure it also has RCA outputs i could possibly go one step further and look at somesort of extra amp or something in the future?

Im unsure whether to just stick to a simple head unit that has all the aux in usb memory stick DAB radio and also the option to play music wirelessly with bluetooth.

Or whether to look at one of these big multimedia thingies. They are still a single din unit but have a motorised big display that pops out. they do about 2 million things youd probably never use but hey least there would be some modern technology in my defender haha.

I'm going with a normal one, but for some reason stereo companies don't do stereos with Bluetooth and dab.

My plan is that in am going to connect some rugged household speakers to a Kenwood car amp I already have and have them on a bracket that hinges from out of the back to the outside.

The 4x50 should be fine, but if you make sure it has rca connectors so if you want more kick you can add a sub or power the speakers with an extra amp.
