Have taken my defender on its first run in a couple of months and its running past halfway on the temperature gauge. Still in the white area but not by much! There is water, the fan is running, there is no heavy load.

The only things changed are the tyres and a light fuel pump tweak. The tyres made no difference to running temps on my disco so can't see why it would on the defender. Both are 200tdis with the same gear and transfer box. The disco was also highly tweaked. There is also no binding brakes or hand brake.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Btw its a 200tdi utility on 265\75 turbo dakars.

radiatior full of dry mud maybe???

Mine was the same doing the same when i was doing about 65 on a long trip, i just took the grill off and cleaned all the mud and insects out of the rad an it has not done it since.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Radiator is clean. Going to check the thermostat today. I can only do the basics as I am on holiday!

You can tell its summer. People will be bragging about this come winter.
If you put the interior fan on does that effect it? I had a non landy years ago and did this as a short journey get me home trick.
Good luck

Radiator is cool all over, but have been stopped for a while now at a services. My heater is permanently on hot so have refrained from fan useage but will give it a go.

Cheers for the suggestions guys. Can't actually find whats going wrong as the engine isn't actually getting very hot, so throwing in a new stat and temperature sender for good measure :)
