Afternoon.

My 110 doesn't have a viscous fan and shrouding fitted, but has a pretty rubbish electric fan fitted.

I'm debating reinstating a viscous fan, but from reading the forums, I understand it's a bit of a chocolate teapot without a shroud in place.

My Q - will a standard defender shroud fit back, considering I'm running a disco 200tdi, or would I end up having to do some modification?

OR am I just wasting my time and need to buy a Kenlowe fan :D

Thanks,

Cheap 16 inch universal fan does a decent job, worth fitting auto control plus manual switch, kenlowe to bloody expensive.

No shroud + viscous fan = waste of time.
If it's disco 200, dont think defender shroud will fit?
If it's defender 200 and you can find a shroud I would go for it, defender shrouds are pretty rare.

Even your rubbish electric will do for a 200, spend your dosh on a decent capillary temp gauge that reads in number degrees and know actual temp you are running at. Tim and Durite good makes.

I would agree that without a shroud there is no point in fitting a viscous fan. And I also disagree that you need to get special fan units. I am funning a ford Mondeo twin fan unit in mine controlled by an x-fan switch form foundry. But there are lots of other options for perfectly suitable diy alternatives to shelling out big money because it say kenlowe. Look at breakers yards or ebay lots of electric fans for sale that have been removed form other vehicles which is better imo than an aftermarket one that is just a fan. at least you know it has been designed properly to do the job rather than a cheap aftermarket job price.

Once in many years of no viscous, I seriously overheated my 200, and that was in winter with snow on the ground off roading.
So it is always worth having a cheapy elec fan as back up, as you simply never know.

I once had my 2a petrol overheat in a blizzard, snow had clogged the rad fins before the stat had opened and when it did there was no air getting through and temp shot up. Just had to park out of the wind and let warmth in the rad do its stuff.

The Tdi generally runs cool. However a tweaked one when laning, off road or towing will get hot and need a fan. People not running a fan are just likely lucking out on it not being needed.
