Hi i would like to put a rear draw in my fenda, but don't really want to loose space, as the no one can sit in the back.

Since i have decided to upgrade my exhaust i will no long have the rear back box, so my thoughts where to cut out a square from above and basically slot a box in flush with the top of the floor.

Would like to know if any one has done this or has seen of anything similar ???

Also what are the dimensions of the rear fuel tank, so i know it wont interfere with any thing.

Pre or post td5?? tank is under drivers seat upto TD5. the moved to rear there after
 
My vehicle is a pre td5 (300tdi) I have the tank under the seat and will keep it there but i have seen people retro fit the td5 tank to older vehicle's.

So my thought was just to copy the dimensions of the tank so nothing will hit an catch. If you get my drift :)
 
You can make it as high as you want it. You'd get plenty of stuff in a 4-5" high storage draw. Doesn't need to be the full length of the rear tub
 
Could some one tell me the dimensions of the td5 rear tank? Have been looking but all i can find, is how much it holds lol.

I also found out that the rear cross member is slightly different but can be modified( cut away ). Also the tank stop's before the a frame so i think my box will have to do the same. :)
 
The alternative is to bolt an ammunition box to the floor, immediately behind the bulkhead. I did it in my S3 lightweight, a couple of padlocks to secure it. I found 105mm ammo box is about the right size.

Have just trawled through it and all though there is some good stuff on there, Nothing like what i am after.

I want the storage to be under the floor so as you look at the car it looks standard and people can still sit in the back, but still be able to lift the lid and have all my tools and so on. :) have made a mock up box to see what will need altering when i do it. Ohh and i still need to change the exhaust :)
 
Don't forget that the rear tub has reinforcing ribs underneath it. You will have to cut thru these. and anything you make will need to be at least as strong as the original structure.
 
But why cut? As I said, if you put a box of some sort up against the bulkhead you don't have to worry about rigidity or strength, and you can put a separate lock on it for security. However, if you are set on cutting, then good luck! I'd be interested in seeing the results, I live in Higham, so not far from you. Have fun
 
I am not set on the idea ,
It just i would prefer the back of my fenda to be free of big boxes and so on and thought that under-slung design might be good, will soon decide :)
 
Just a thought. I remember seeing a 90 gun carrier prototype that went through Withams a few years ago. Seem to remember it was in one of the magazines too. It had storage cubby holes and drawers all over the shop. Might be worth a bit of research just for ideas. Don't know if anybody else remembers it? May have been a Bob Morrison article too. I nearly bid for it, but they wanted silly money.
 
I think the OPs got a decent idea. Its a space thats been utilised on newer defenders so why not do the same with older ones. Im sure someone with welding know how could add some supports to maintain the strength. I can understand why he wouldnt want a box in the back though; i carry a thomas bin in mine which is an army type box, look it up theyre cracking. Theyre designed to fit perfectly between the wheel boxes or sat up on top of one lengthways, as i have mine. Problem with this is it restricts me to carrying one person in the back and along with my dog and maybe a few bags or a bunch of extra tools it becomes quite tight and cluttered. Would be keen to see if the OP progresses with it and how it turns out
 
I think the OP's got a great idea and its one I may steal. A simple angle frame to fit into the floor will give rigidity back and allow you to have a strong lid secured to it, a box make up to the inside dimensions of the chassis legs would be a fair size as well and its just a bit more storage, I also want a rear passanger and I carry my spare inside as well so this sounds like a great solution to where I store my straps/tools without taking up my valuable floor space. A lot of people put a rear winch in this space coming through the cross member, there is no reason it couldn't be used for storage...
