Defender Pulling to one side

I had a bit of a problem with my 1987 Defender 90. i was driving about 30-40 mph and then heard something clunking and mechanical from the underside then the steering went all to hell and had a wee fight to keep it at my side of the road. There was nothing visibly falling off and I couldn't see any obvious reason for this weird problem. I then drove the remaining 10 miles home with no more problems.

Prior to this in the last week I have heard an ocaisonal clunk from underneath and I thought there was a couple times it was pulling to the left.

With a 25 year old motor you expect the odd weird problem but this one has got me confused. is it a brake problem, a drive shaft problem, transmission ????

Anybody out there had a problem like this???

wheel bearing, or CV on the side its pulling to, if a bearing has collapsed, every so often it wil jam in, pulling the steering over.

Thanks, you were spot on, it's the bearings. I got complete kits for both sides. however, I ran into a problem immediately. I could not get the caliper off. The Torx head retaining bolts would not move and after 3 hours of trying every thing I could think of and the bolt heads completely shot, I have put it on hold untill I visit my local Landrover garage who assure me they can release these bolts (what's wrong with a hex b***dy head bolt)

Anyway thanks for your help

I had the same problem with mine so i bought a set of irwin bolt removers that go onto your socket set and applied a little heat and they came off hope this helps.

Hi Danny,

I have a set of Irwin bolt extractors but managed to break a 3/8" drive wrench trying to get the sodding bolts out. I'm hoping my local Landy garage will be able to take them out on Monday and replace them with regular bolts.

Oh well i hope you get it sorted maybe try welding a bolt to the head of the knackered one. oh and i tried to get proper bolts without success so hope you find some and let us all know so we can change ares if you find some.
