Hi guys, I'm buying myself a landy.
But I am unsure whether to get a Defender or a Disco. I really like the practicality of the Defender but I heard they will be outlawed in 2015 to meet this pedestrian safety malarkey. Is this correct?
My dad has a 2004 Discovery and I really like that too. It feels nice to drive and is great off road.

Cheers

if you are worried about pedestrian safety - get a defender.

Reasons for :-

Defender - if you hit a pedestrian they will die - so they cant sue you!
Discovery - They might not die quite so much... so they might sue you?

that just my simple mind at work there anyway...

I would say a Defender i have the most impractical the Truck cab, but i still love it noisy, leaks has you forever worrying but the upside looks the dogs bits does what it say on the can and in the correct hands will go anywhere (not mine i hasten to add!!!!!) If its for fitting more than a few people then i would suggest say the Discovery but i have never owned one but sometimes i wish i did when i want to get the family in. A guy down the road from me swears by his. Where has the OUTLAWED come from i heard they were going to faze them out cause of EU bollocks but not outlaw them Scary....

Think this is all a bit arse about face. YES it was/is/maybe being phased out as a current production vehicle, but not that they are outlawing existing defenders:

"The all new Land Rover Defender is all set to find a new manufacturing assembly plant at Tata Motors plant in Pune, Maharashtra. The plant is scheduled to begin manufacturing the vehicle soon. It seems strange that the Land Rover Defender, which was listed to be phased out by 2015 due to EU regulations and later got a reprieve till 2017, will set shop in Pune."

Land Rover Defender likely to be manufactured in Pune

People are telling me that they are being outlawed. I should add that I haven't and do not believe them, I was just wondering if anyone else has heard the rumors. Perhaps my wording in the original post was causing confusion?
At the moment I'm edging towards a Defender because they look cool, are practical and are basic. Perfect for modifying etc. And best of all, they are noisy and annoy other drivers. I must do some research about engines, there's probably another thread on here somewhere about Defender engines but if any of you have a Defender and are really pleased with the engine, please let me know :)

I have a disco 1 with the 300tdi ingine and loads of off road kit. it goes nearly anywhere I point it. plus its comfy fer a long cruise over to wales fer the lanes and kan even squeeze all the wifes sisters kids in FFS plus no electronics so easy to fix and modify and the heaters a dam sight better than a fender. having said all this if I could afford to run a disco for day to day and then have a fender as a toy that is what i would do but if its 1 to do everything then I would say comfort and ability its a disco but I'm an old fart and need me creature comforts these days

Loved my defender but it killed my back

Now have a disco 2 es

Heated seats that recline with elbow room........magic
