hi, ive just done a 200tdi conversion to my 110 v8. so changed the gearbox for a supposedly good defender lt77 box. well now its relatively finished but having major gear problems.

they seem to be in the wrong place. 1st and reverse is almost straight ahead and 3rd is where 5th would be. so i can select reverse, 1, 2, 3 and 4. but 5th is gone. it seems like all the gears are far too far to the Right hand side.

when i bought the gearbox it had the gear selectors off which did seem very odd but just took his word that it was ok.

so is this major or is there some adjustment somewhere?

proper defender box ?,if it is pull top off and ensure quadrant sits in yoke properly ,check under turret for the same and grub screw is tight

yeah, has genuine parts plate on it. was supposed to only have 30k on it. i put the top on and i put the yoke on the end of the shaft so i know that all in properly.

tutter???

turret ,the bit gear stick pivots in ,when in neutral the slot in the yoke in the box should be straight up ,as should yoke inder turret, there is a gth geear aduster on some on lhs of gear box top housing under turret, but id remove housing again and in front of yoke on selector shaft is 5th gear interlock ,it needs pulling back wards to ensure its held by its support thats fastened to under side of housing

well, just looked and when the gearstick is in neutral you just have to push it forward and it goes straight into first, slightly left and i mean only slightly is reverse. the gearstick is still nearly in the centre when in reverse.

took the top off and everything looks in order but the yoke will no turn far enough one way!

yes it doesnt move very far, how can i be sure it is locating in the downward facing turret when i put the top back on?

yes i have the top right off. i was using a level bar to select gears and it will select all the gears fine but they are just all slightly in the wrong place over to one side. so the gear selector unit will not quite go over far enough to get fifth.

well, i have taken off the four bolts and then removed the entire selctor unit. i can see the but that locates into that downwards facing turret on the underside of the selector housing.

although my brother just had a thought. i put that yolk on myself, the roll pin goes in at a diagonal so if i have put it on the wrong way round then that would be the cause would it not?

Hi,
Trying to revive this thread as having the same problem with my LT77s. Did you ever get to the bottom of this? Was it the selector quadrant? or something else.......??

Yes did mate, I had refitted the remote. Well the selector bit that is fitted onto the selector shaft inside the gearbox with a roll pin, I had put this on the wrong way round. All it was, but if u decide to nock the pin out to change it make sure u can catch the pin, mine went right into gearbox...

I was very lucky to retrieve it on a magnet on the end of some wire!

Dave, Just been having a go at that pin but having trouble getting to it. Have taken out the mounts and lowered the box but still cant get at it especially as the fact it is on back to front means i cant hit the rollpin straight on anyway! Did you manage this with the box in the vehicle or was it on a bench? any tips?!
