Upon removal of my headlamp covers today I noticed that there are two retaining screws and yet there are four captive springy things to screw into around the headlamp.
Any idea what the other two are for please

They are spire nuts.

Mine has them, same as yours, but they are not used.

I think they are put in as standard fit and are used when different option trim is installed - I think some military versions have head lamp covers that only cover the edges of the head light, and not the side light and indicators so these spire nuts allow them to be screwed in all four corners.

Your version uses two screws and the two other lamps (Side and Indicator) to hold the trim in place.

Thank you for a very informative post:):):)
