Having not driven the Defender in the dark for some months I was out [due to localised flooding] the other night and noticed that my headlights and dash lights appear to have a pulse. The pulse is in rythm with the engine revs. Is this normal or is it a symptom of future battery/alternator problems?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Joe

Alternator/battery issue yes, it would seem that your alternator is barly able to run your electrics.

I would get the alternator rebuilt or replaced.

It sounds like ya Voltage Regulator is going in the back of ya Alternator is it a 2.5 n/a if so you can fix it ya self easy... Cost ya about £3 to £4 for the part.....

Thanks all. It is a 1996 300 TDi. Starts on the button everytime so maybe I won't go out after dark.

Eh up MM.

I've an old alternator thats knackered- the charge light wouldnt go out so I reckoned one of the gizmos on the back of it had gone- Any how it's off my 2.5 TD, will this part you mention fit it and who sells em and wot are they called.

depending on what make/model the alternator is, they have a regulator and a diode pack. and sometimes the whole package is in one single unit.
