Defender 2.5td almost ready for MOT , but still a few loose connectors to find homes for . Have hooked up reverse switch . But found another stray wire hanging by chassis near gearbox , where are the other electrics /switches on the gearbox/transfer box? I did hook it up to the oil filter but that seemed to light up the 4 wheel drive warning light so think there must be a switch /sensor somewhere I can't spot on the transfer box/ gearbox , any directions ?

If you remove the tunnel you should be able to see a couple of switches on the side of the gearbox as you look down.

The front one is for the diff lock lamp and the rear is for the low gearbox oil lamp.

You may not have the low oil switch on an early model. The diff lock switch is on the difflock casing, in front of the main transfer casing. Follow the linkage down from the transfer gearknob. there should be a short black wire from one side of the switch to the casing, your stray greenish wire goes on the other terminal.

Did not know they had s low gearbox oil lamp. With the Landies leaking so much oil I guess they thought it best to have one:D.

Which models have the lamp? I think it's a good idea indeed.

they dont some have temp switch

Thought I never heard of a lamp on the defender James but do know that ther is aftermarket transmission temp gauges so hence there are temp switches.

I intend to make the Landy leak free, I know good luck with that lol but I will try. Can't see the tolerances being that bad and having really imperfect surfaces.

There is a great auto silicone I swear by which has helped seal thousands of leaks in our shop.

Thanks for the promp and accurate replies as usual James.

Cheers.

It just takes patience to make an old Landy leak free. Replace the gaskets and seals, cleaning all the surfaces carefully before reassembly and hey presto. Mine hardly loses a drop - 1985, with 220k on the clock.
