Does anyone know off hand what size the nut is on the drop arm. Just went to remove mine and my biggest socket (32mm) is not big enough. Dont want to go and buy one until I know what size it is for sure.

Cheers

Got a feeling the nut is actually imperial and sits somewhere between 33mm and 34mm

Know I couldn't get a 33mm socket on mine, 34mm was fine and in truth undoing the nut was the least of my problems in removing the drop arm:eek:

Talking nuts and bolt! want to buy a socket set that will cover most bolts on the car, anyone know of a good priced set! None of the sets i had for my midget are any good, missing most of them!

8 -19 mm covers most ,for larger sizes you could either use metric or imperial of which you need 21mm (13/16) 22mm (7/8) 24mm (15/16) 27mm (1,1/16) 30mm (1,1/4) 34mm (1,1/3)

The drop arm is bolted onto tapered splines if my memory serves me. An absolute t%$t of a job to remove.

I was changing the oil seals on the steering box on my old Discovery a few years ago and I broke a three legged puller on it. I tried everything I could thing off except cut it off and failed miserably. In the end I took it off and got a mechanic to heat it up while I nervously held the drift and someone else belted it off. Eventually it shot off about 30' across the workshop.

A friend of mine who had done this previously told me I should have loosened the bolt and gone for a drive down a bumpy lane.

drop arm is held by a slow taper and so can be removed by hitting the arm on the rear or side ,hit hard enough it will distort and break the taper hold, just as you do with track rod ends etc,as its thick it needs a good sized lump hammer or small sledge
