Defender chassis help

Hi, new to this forum and after a bit of advice.

Just got hold of a 1990 Defender from the in laws. Been used on a farm and whilst it needs a bit of TLC it looks ok. The chassis has had a bit of welding before but otherwise "appears" ok (had a poke around and it all appears solid) and recently past it's MOT. Lots of surface rust as you would expect, but need to know whether at this age it is still worth trying to protect it.

I am prepared to put the work in, but only if worth doing (cant afford a replacement though!)?

Also any suggestions on what paint to use on the rear cross member - previously kept rust free with a coat of old oil but needs sorting

if its still got a solid chassis then well worth protecting especialy if you can't afford a new galv chassis. unfortunately they can rust from the inside out. so you need to prtectect them from the inside aswell

i'm in the same boat at the moment just got the backend off mr lr90 to do some welding and other bits.
just need to start cleaning and welding.
i'm going to try and make a rig up so i can spray the inside of the chassis through the drain holes.

Tak your point about rust inside the chassis-I am going to get it on a ramp and have a good look around.

What would you recommend treating with - been on a number of landrover websites and seen conflicting advice. Waxoyl seems to find some favour, but then others dismiss it. Any recommendations?

For the inside the chassis it needs to be sprayed in and to be honest waxoyle is your best bet. Stuff the chassis FULL of the stuff - first you will want to try and get it as clean as possible.

If you need to do repairs and have a hold anywhere (well will have once you cut the rust out) these can become useful access points where you can get a jet washer in and lift out any mud. If not garden hose, let it run through the chassis to soften any much and take loose stuff out. You get the idea.

Get the chassis clean as a whistle on the outside, let a jetwash lift any loose paint and rust.
Let it dry out now - will take a while and doesn't help if it keeps raining!

Then sand/grind any flakes of paint and rust off.

Now choose your primers and paints:

POR15, Inc. - Stop Rust Permanently - Repair Gas & Fuel Tanks - this stuff is great for rust stopping - available on ebay.

Plasti Dip - Flexible air dried coating, Brush Dip and Spray from £5 - or http://www.rustoleumdirect.co.uk/

You can paint up the chassis with this stuff. Then I would give areas that will get road spray/chippings (front outriggers/tubular outriggers/rear crossmember) a blast with waxoyle underseal as that will act like a cushion when stones fly up.

Hi could anybody help me i own a h reg defender 90 200tdi i want to wax oil the inside of the chassis if after cleaning and draining it all off if i was to plug up all the drain holes and put the wagon at an angle could i reach all of the in side of the chassis by filling from the front jacking point holes.
