Defender Alarm Upgrade/replacement

Hi All,

Ive searched but cant find an answer to my question.

I was thinking about getting a better alarm, one with a dual zone microwave sensor with warn away function, so when someone gets close it tells em to fook off.

Is it possible to add the sensor onto the alarm system that came as standard? Its a 1998 300tdi and has an alarm and immobiliser but after reading on here that they are quite easy to defeat, I was thinking of upgrading the alarm system to either add a proximity sensor, or replacing the alarm all together with a new one?

If I was to replace it, would the standard fit alarm and immobiliser be disabled? Or is it not possible?

Also, is it pretty easy for a DIY'er to fit a decent alarm system? Obviously if I can fit it myself, I can get a more expensive alarm system without paying for fitting.

I can't answer your question, beyond commenting that yes a reasonable DIY job given the ease of access to the Landy's cables!

Have you done the physical basics already - Disklock, Clutch Claw, man eating tiger in back etc?

Ive got the basics, and the man eating tiger is growing a little each day, so will be in their soon...

mines didnt have a factory fit alarm, But i did go for a Viper cat 1 alarm and imobiliser.
I can do a great fitting of alarm myself but you get better protection with a CAT 1 as the imobiliser circuits etc are all black cables, the usual DIY fit are standard colours,
Witht he correct installation it makes some insurance companies very happy as you get your certificate. I think i paid 4 -5 hundred quid for supply and fit, but at least i know that it is an approved alarm system and a thatcham approved installer.

As for your standard alarm i read on one of the forums how to permantely disable them on the TD5. But on a standard 98 300TDI like mine there is only the EGR Ecu so the existing sytem should be able to be totally removed, Phone around the companies in your area, a few i spoke to hadnt worked on landy;s so i gave them a body swerve.
