Hi all, i have what i think is the standard defender alarm and immobiliser. However i am not sure how it works.
If i just close and lock the door on the key, there is a little red light that flashes in the dash. I dont need to do anything and just put my key in the car and start it.
If i press what looks like the lock button, i get two short honks on the horn. If i try to start the car here, the alarm goes off an I am mashing buttons to try and make it stop. Mostly the horn.

So my question is - is it armed when i press the button and i get the two horn honks? (seems a bit odd). If not how DO i arm it?
How do i unlock so that i don't wake the neighbours up at 6:30 every morning?

Many thanks!

Lock with key in door - no alarm, no imob just locks the door(s)

Press the right button on the fob - locks the doors (if central locking) and sets the alarm and imob

If its honking at you it means "mislock" which means the 10AS alarm unit is "seeing" a door or the bonnet as open.

Usually its the lil pressure switch on the A or B pillar, the contacts on the back often fail. Theres also one under the bonnet (left of the airbox on a td5)

It shouldnt honk when you unlock regardless, odd if it does!

Thats great thanks. I think it could be the bonnet as the gap is far too big but i cant seem to get it to close properly. Adjusted the bonnet bump stop to no avail.

Is it still armed if it honks when i lock it?

Yes still armed if it honks.

The bonnet switch is at the back on the bulkhead.

Best way to check is hold the various switches down and press the fob, if it honks thats the dead switch!

ok, so to disarm it is the left switch? Just once? As it is still going of having pressed left button, unlocked and tried to start the car. Sorry if I am being incredibly dense here.

If you are sat in the car and press the lock button the alarm will go off. The motion sensor sets it off as soon as you move a muscle. If you lock it with the fob and then unlock with the key, the alarm will go off.

I find that when the car battery is low on voltage (and needs a recharge) the locking and alarm systems play up. So worth checking the battery voltage.
