I have a problem with my 03/53 plate 27k miler TD5 90! When it's been standing for a few hours, when I start it, it starts instantly with no problem, but then it chuffs out blue smoke when you rev it a little - for the 1st few seconds and whilst doing so, it has no power and isn't quite running right. Like I say, for 2-3 seconds, then it's as right as rain and I can pull away safely.

I was initially informed it was the fuel pump - so, swapped the fuel pump I did (or so my specialist tells me) - for a brand new one - since then the problem only seems to have gotten worse if anything. Certainly didn't cure it!

All I've done is spend money on rectifying this problem so far, with no resolution. I've had many theories suggested as to what is is - but I think it's a simple fix - whatever it is.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks to Charles's help, I think the problem is resolved!! Yet to finally prove it today, but I'm pretty sure this is resolved.

This is a great forum and I'm sincerely glad it exists!

What was the problem?
Well, I've had this landy for a few months (and it's suffered this issue since then intermittently). Turns out, the engine was over filled with oil by at least a litre!

I'm surprised it ran as well as it did with that much oil in it. The non-main dealer I bought it off (in North Wales) was obviosuly a little over zealous with oil when they serviced it.

What surprises me is the number of "experts" (excluding friends) who have looked at this so far and entertained suggestions as to what the cause of the fault could have been, whilst none of'em (includng myself! - STUPID BOY:mad: ) thought to check this!

In their defence though, I do have to say that I did mention a seemingly fuel related ongoing issue I also have as well which I didn't mention on the forum because I ultimatley thought they were unrelated. I'm now sure that they aren't.

The other issue is; whilst the fuel pump is priming and running (before cranking the engine and after), there is a loud-ish hiss coming from the fuel filter. This isn't the noise of the fuel pump itslef priming, it's a separate hiss which starts just after you hear the pump start to prime. Sometimes follows a few seconds after, sometimes nearly the same time. If you don't crank the engine, when the fuel pump priming eventually stops (isn't that around 10 seconds-ish? - mine seems to take a little longer) the fuel pump stops as normal - well the hiss also then stops as well (and restarts when the fuel pump restarts or the engine is cranked and running).

By the way, the existing filter doesn't have water in it, and isn't leaking diesel.

The fuel pump was apparently exchanged for the brand new one which I procurred and provided to my local "specialist", though neither fault was rectified owing to the fuel pump replacement (though the power / blue smoke issue was resolved yesterday and caused by too much oil - as stated above).

As far as I can tell, I have no other ill effects casued by the hiss. It's JE Stage 2'd, with a Disco S2 transfer and runs very well - but why the hiss?

I need to procure a fuel filter, (today if possible) and swap it. Might just be a case of the filter.

Anybody any suggestions?
