How will the defender 90 be on long journeys? Im talking a 200 mile round trip...

Or are they too slow to go on motorway etc? Btw, ill be 18 when i buy one so bear in mind ill buy a proper slow one. :D

Ben.

Ben, I do 350 mile trips to Aberdeen and back and the machine is pretty comfy. I do wear ear plugs to blot out the noisy engine though...

Never had a probelm with long trips did over 100miles a day for 6 months (deaf now) - and went London -> Cumbria as well without problems (except once when i forgot to put oil back in the transfer box) but it still did over 400 miles (Truck Haven (services on M6) -> Lake District -> London with only two of the three bearings left in the box (but with oil in it now:) )

You will love it, and then start moding it, and then a bit more, and then a bit more

and then a bit more

and then a bit more....

i did 1200 miles devon to scotland. it was a laugh a took ages! but wouldn't want to do too often. the missus does 60 miles a day in it to get to work (90 with 200tdi)

I did a 400 mile trip last week, North of Scotland - Home, towing a trailer as well, and was surprised with my 300Tdi 110. Not as noisy as I thought it would be, and surprisingly comfortable. I found that putting my left foot up on the handbrake (when on the motorway) made things even more comfortable. Only stopped a couple of times for the kids/dogs, and could easily have driven for a while longer, happy days indeed.:D:D:D:D

You will have worked out that they will do it , but 110 generally gives a better ride , and V8 adds speed and quieter , for info a long trip is Runcorn to Naples non stop towing a satellite dish. Perth (OZ) to Mount Augustus and return (recovery with trailer of T*y@t~) 110 V8 and LOTS of petrol with 4hour stop. :D

My 300tdi 90 seems to like 55mph on a quiet motorway. Nothing rattles and noise is fine and that really boosts your mpg. If its busy I nudge it up to 60mph rather than have lorries stacked up waiting to get past. I try not to be the 'meat in the sandwich' between 2 lorries if the weather is bad as they dont stop as quick as a Landy.

Hi..................1995 90 300tdi sation wagon ( no rear roof lining) several recent 350miles each way round trips for holidays and family visits.
No problem....just plod along at legal speeds which with all the road works can be a lot at 50mph anyway !

ive done a far 250 miles trips in my 90 since i got it, plan next year going round europe in it, 2000 miles over 10 days!!

I had fitted 1.222 high ratio gears from ashcroft in a 300tdi transfer box, cruised at 60/70 easily, if you have the time and money id recommend the 1.222 gears from ashcroft

ive now got a standard transfer box in and i sit at 60 easliy!! just takes longer to get places

Hi
March 2009 I did a 1900mile roadtrip around the whole of Scotland in my Defender HT 90 TD5 '02 38k. Did a full service before I went and I had no problems up there, mechanically. Buckinghamshire - Durness - West coast scotland - Isle Of Mull - Buckinghamshire. Was the best trip ever! I went for a week and used only 1 campsite. The rest of the time I camped beside the smaller single track roads, the locals have no problems. They usually stop for a chat and are very pleasant. Was doing 150miles a day average. On the Motorway it was ok, alittle noisy and slow (avg 65) but I did 450miles that day no worries and felt pretty fresh when I jumped out at the other end . On some off the long twisty A roads the ody roll gets really noticable. However, its worth the trip up there for when you get to the single track roads and gravel tracks the Defender is great at a nice gentle trundling pace. I hope this give anyone else out there who is thinking of going on a big trip a shove in the right direction.
Cheers Ben
