How do you start it then? you say 'once it's been started' but you don't say how you start it 1st thing?

Sounds more like an earth fault to me - especially if overnight/damp related

Would check the battery posts are good and tight, then trace the earth lead from the battery to the chassis, remove, clean, apply copper grease and do up tight.

Also check the earth from the engine block to the chassis - should cure for you

Have already done that but thanks for suggestion

got the same on my td5 last winter, general opinion was earths, garage cleaned all earths. On saturday it was turning over but would'nt fire up, battery went down, put leads on to aux batt and that died. went out sunday morning and tried again battery was fine and it started no problem. I had been out laning in the week and done a couple of fords so may be it is a damp thing, will try loads of wd40 and see if that helps.
