Hi
First post from a new member:
I’ve got a 1989 TD200 ‘90’

Only had it a couple of months.
In the last couple of weeks it’s started giving a click when I go to start it.
I put a new battery on it last week as it had been running a leisure battery as it’s cranking battery so I thought (assumed) this would sort it.
If it’s been stood more than a couple of days it does it.
Turn the key and it clicks, accompanied by the dash lights dimming.
It may do it once or twice before firing up, or it can need 12 or more attempts.
Any thoughts?
Brand new battery so it’s not that.
I’ve thought about checking the earth strap and connections on the starter before I change the starter motor……

The standard Earth straps are junk
A quick test to confirm the Earth strap is at fault is to put the jump lead from the battery negative onto somewhere good on the engine

As above regarding the earth points. Also check the large nut at the back of the starter motor. It can loosen over time so is an easy check.

Swapped it out. Eventually.
Had a mare getting in there and thought I’d have to strip the cab floor and go in that way.
Had another go yesterday and this time I unstrapped the bonnet and tied it back against the windscreen.
Once I could see what I was doing it wasn’t too bad.

Only issue was I cocked up the wiring and fried my battery! 🙄
All sorted now though.
