hi

i am looking to buy a defender 90 within the next couple of weeks

i wonder if you can give me some advice on which model to go for, if i give you the type of driving i will be using it for?

5 days a week, 20miles urban round trip-for work

1 day a week 30-40 miles motorway work then 3-4 miles of steep, off road work- when i go shooting

occasional 130 mile motorway/a road trips- when i go fishing

probably another 50miles various urban/a road work

i have around £3k-£3.5k to spend, and mpg is more important than mph! i am not bothered by slow/sluggish urban, but ideally would like a motorway cruise of 60-65 mph or so

i have read so much conflicting stuff on the net, i am totally confused!

so far i have been told,

buy a 90 as cheap as poss, then spend £1k on an lrv diesel engine conversion

buy a v8 and spend £1,8k on a lpg conversion

buy a 2.5 normally aspirated diesel (better on fuel)

buy a 200tdi (better on the motorway)

any advice from group members will be greatly appreciated

russ

From my limited experience my money would be on a 200tdi. for what you want to do, the power will be more than enough! the offroad abbility eg. climbing is excellent, less worry of the wet than a v8 and driven with a light right foot the mpg will be pretty good.

I was running a 200tdi and the mpg was about 32 cruising at 80mph ish. And the power was more than impressive.
hope this helps a little.

thanks for the quick reply,

a further question, i hope you dont mind?

is there anywhere i can visit on the web, where there is a list of engine specs/years of manufacture?

what im thinking of is something like

1988-1990 -2.5 normally aspirated diesel

1990-1996-200tdi

1996-2000-300tdi

i know the years are wrong, its just an example. lol

i want to be equipped with enough knowledge that, when i look at a 90, i will know if it has the right engine for the right year
i realiz ethat there are many 90's out there with later engines fitted.

also, some people just advertize "defender 90 1993 diesel" etc. a year guide would help me know which enhine was fitted

also, power steering would be useful (more for her indoors), what years was this fitted, or was it just an optional extra?

hope i dont sound too stupid

russ

hi russ

no, you don't sound stupid at all. with so many mod's - good and bad - out there, you are right to want to know what the spec' is for a certain vintage.

the diesel 2.5 n/a was fitted until 1990, as was the turbo diesel (which was just a turbo grafted onto the n/a lump). these vehicles were 'nineties' or 'one tens', and in 1990, the 200tdi came out. thereafter, the 'defender' model name was used. the 200tdi was then replaced with the quieter 300tdi in 1994.

power outputs were much better in the tdi's, 111bhp i think. for £3-3.5k, i think you will struggle to get a good 200tdi. that's more the price range for a turbo diesel. 300tdi is £4.5k up, certainly over £5k for decent one.

I have a defender TD5 from 1999
In 2000 the car was recalled because of a faulty flyingwheel.
This was replaced. I know that the replaced ones bear the Article number with a suffix "K".
Today I had to repair (replace!) the clutch and the flyingwheel, exactly for the fault like it appeared in the 1999 type.
My wheel was produced by "Valeo" and has the number: 267 MF PSD 103470, without the suffix "K"
Is this one from the faulty series, or from the new replacement series.
Has someone of you an idea to help me with this info?

Peter
