Defender 300tdi water leak

Hi, 1997 defender 300tdi. About a month ago noticed squealing sound front front of engine.Traced to auxiliary belt slipping due to automatic belt tensioner seized. Replace tensioner assy and belt. All OK.
After a short drive today noticed major leak from front of landy after stopped on drive.lifted bonnet, water everywhere and with engine running could see water dripping from bottom of water pump area behind water pump pulley and onto belt. Difficult to see but looks to be directly beneath the gasket area, although water could be running down to there from somewhere else.? Water pump running with no noise so assume bearing ok. Convinced it is the water pump but leaking from where? Also is it a coincidence or has fitting the new tensioner and belt caused the water pump to fail? Extra tension? Water pump is 21 years old. Stopped engine and water still dripping from same place at a fair rate.
Mechanic will investigate further Tuesday.
Any ideas?

have a look at the p gasket where housing joins the block you can see it from the side at the back of the alt if its leaking youll have a rusty streak on the block ,but new tensioner and an old pump would seem a likely cause

I have checked the P gasket and it doesn’t appear to be leaking from there. It can only be the water pump and/or gasket. Just been looking online at new water pumps. I presume that if new tensioner has caused problem then additional tension would be on pulley and bearing and it’s leaking from there. I will find out on Tuesday when mechanic strips it down.

What brand of water pump did you buy? I got through 2 britpart ones in less than 2 months

I haven’t bought one yet and that’s my next question. Which brand? I believe the part number is PEB500090 and there seems to be quite a choice. Aftermarket, OEM and LR original. Why is nothing ever easy?

Oem is about 100 which I'll be honest I've finally fitted to mine as I was feeling flush but quinton hazel (I think) are a decent brand which I've fitted to other tdi's with no issues and are about 25 quid from craddocks, britpart ones are about 12

Tensioner was a Dayco and cost £54:00

Shouldn't be an issue with that then

I put a Quinton Hazell one on mine a few years ago. £30.60 including VAT from Turners. No bother with it so far.

If you're doing the water pump, spend a bit more time and do the P gasket too. the water pump bolts help hold the mounting bracket on - when I changed my water pump, the P gasket started leaking a few days later!
