Guys.
My water pump failed completely and I changed it for a new one.

Then I realised that the P gasket was leaking and had to take it all apart again, there was no gasket just orange instant gasket! so replaced the P gasket with the correct steel one and carefully filed the housing as there was corrosion on the mating face. It's been back together a week just fine, and noticed last night that water is running out of the joint and dripping on the road.

Really getting fed up of having to redo jobs over again. What is the best course of action. Take it apart and use silicon and refit. Or can the housing be skimmed flat to make sure of a good seal.

Cheers.

youd have to be careful not to remove much as it would put pulley out of line ,when tightening housing the 3 bolts around the water gallery should be done first

Ok, will strip again and have a look, I was rushing a bit so may have done something silly. I did forget to tighten the water pump pulley bolts at first but spotted them.

+1 first time I did one the barstool leaked afterwards.

As james says silicon each side usualy does the trick, I would use a new gasket as they are a crush type that you should only use once.

You want to clean gasket surface with wet & dry wrapped around somthing dead flat the same width of surface to be cleaned so you don't do dip's & bevels !

Escaped from the kids for half an hour. The bolts did take another nip up, maybe a turn each, nothing leaking yet, but only fired it up quickly. If it leaks again I will re do with a new gasket and silicone.

Whilst messing with the bolts, I noticed the brand new fan belt is shredded on the back face and the one edge rib is tearing away. Put the old belt back on and now something is squeaking. Sounds like the belt tensioner bearing that I just replaced.

Doh
