Hello Fellow Landy Lovers,

Had a strange problem with my gearbox this afternoon on my 88 Defender 110 (Discovery 200TDI conversion). Pulled in a car park spot, backed up and repositioned my Landy to center it between the lines. Well when I came back to depart, I depressed the clutch pedal, started the engine, placed the gearbox in reverse and the beast lurched forward. I noticed that the gear lever was very loose and it didn't disengage the gearbox from first gear. There was no resistance moving the gear lever right to left, front to back. It seemed to engage in reverse but remained in first gear. Took off the gear lever housing just to see if the ball or cup mechanism broke, but all looked in good order. I was then able to move the cup with my finger which moved the connected spring shaft back, forth, right, and left without any resistance what so ever. I did however get her home (in first gear) without incident (gearbox sounded good, no grinding what-so-ever) after pushing her out of the parking spot. Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be and possible solutions with cost if able. Much Appreciated! Lee:confused:

disco has gear stick that come out of a top, fitted to rear of box ,defender haqs an extension housing moving the gear stick housing forward, you have either pulled seloctor pin out from between selcector forks ,or a yoke has come loose

James, It looks like I have a Defender gearbox and I'm guessing it'll have to come out to get repaired. Thanks for the diagnoses. I've gotta get to work and ripper it out. Cheers Lee

if you havent already remove turret gear stick bolts too theres a grub screw comes loose under there ,if okay ,remove extension housing too and check quadrant and shaft

Should have the gearbox pulled tomorrow to proceed with troubleshooting as the grub screw is good. Thanks for the assistance. Cheers, Lee

Pulled the extension housing and found the roll pin connecting the quadrant and shaft together was missing and in the bottom of the gear box. Errgghhh. Not to worry, bought a magnet/grabber rod and fished around the gearbox and tada the roll pin and roll pin fragment all in two tries. She's all together again and amazingly I found places for all the hardware I took off. No extra parts this time.:) Thanks James Martin!
