Does anyone have a picture of how the 200tdi engine compartment should look? I've done something wrong, and now It's extremely difficult to use the oil dipstick, because of the intercooler hoses. All the pre-existing bends and pipes seem to be in the right place, i.e. where they fall naturally, but I just can't get the dipstick in and out.

I suspect that everyone's layout will be slightly different, especially in relation to the positioning and mounting of the air filter. So...for what they are worth, here are a couple of pics from way back when I fitted a Disco 200tdi to my old 110
:)

Def with def engine, or def with disco engine?
Maybe easier for you to take a pic of what you have, save laods of people running around for you?

It's a standard 200tdi Defender engine in a 1990 Defender. If there is no 'standard' layout, then fair enough, but I've only got one to judge it by.

In that case then yes you need long arms, as it is bit of an art getting to the dipstick!
Pic incoming, just let me find them.

As ^^ post a pic of what you have an allow people to comment is probabaly easiest. My engine bay looks very similar to @Beneagles pictures above with reference to the dipstick but my air filter is upright rather than angled. but again it is a discovery 200tdi in a defender.

The standard defender 200tdi dipstick is a bit deep in the engine bay imo, it doesn’t feel right but that’s how it came from the factory!!
