Rebuilt engine 2.5 TD 19j running but very rough and lots of :(white smoke. Looks like my timing might be 180 deg out . Will the engine run even when 180 deg out ? I've got the timing pin in position on flywheel, and both valves are closed on cylinder 1 cylinder 4 is showing valve movement so assuming that is TDC , but the marks on injector pump and cam don't align . If I rotate 1 full rotation on crank then marks on injector and cam align so I think it's 180 deg out am I correct ?

tdc no1 is when both valves on no1 are closed no4 on the rock or both slightly open, it would sound like its out try resetting belt and check crank key is at 8 oclock

Do you have to release rocker assembly to allow the cam to turn without it making the valves hit the pistons ? Or can you just turn the crank over and leave the cam stationary ?

Well engine front rebuilt and starting. Running ok but still getting some white smoke so I'm guessing it might need some more 'fine' tuning. I'll re-check the tappet gaps , and if that's not the cause, maybe Advance the ingnition pump a little . Is that anticlockwise as you look from the front of the car ?
Any other suggestions ?

Good news .... It passed its emissions test ... Easily . MOT tester was well impressed, he was surprised it was the 19j , thought they had all be swapped out for 200TDIs, and was a bit of a fan of the engine , said it was running like a sowing machine, but to watch over filling the oil as the crank foams the oil and then it doesn't lubricate . ☺️ Thanks for all the help .

a strange warning , you need to seriously over fill before it reached the crank

The MOT tester said the Army had issued a maint warning about as they had had problems . Ah well I've drained a bit to bring it back to max level so all good ☺️ Thanks for yer help , just some minor MOT issues to sort now A Frameball joint and steering joint covers and she'll be retested and back on the road after 5 yrs ☺️
