Hi everyone, I was wondering what size jack id need to safely jack up my defender from each wheel, this weekend looks dry where I’m from, which means I can start rust proofing my defender after many many hours of preparation, however I’ll need to jack up each wheel so can remove it and get into each nook and cranny within the wheel etches spring mounts etc 2 tonne or 3 tonne ok for this? Thanks in advance

A 2 tonne jack will be adequate but Id go for a 3 tonne. They are less effort to pump and generally have a higher lift height, although they are heavier to lug about. Hope you have decent axle stands.

Are you looking at a trolley or bottle?
either weight is fine for a defender, I use a nice strong 3t trolley in the garage.
But a set of axle stands is also a good investment as a back up specially if you is putting your ed under there:).

Are you standard wheels cos lift of some jack can be an issue.

Edit Col got there first:)

Thanks guys, was thinking of just going Halfords as they are only down the road and have a trade card which makes a massive difference to pricing 90 percent of the time, I was thinking would I be able to lift it into my landy easy enough? I think I’ve got some axle stands already but I’ll buy some if needs must

Yes they are not so heavy that you cant lift them but you wouldnt want to cary it home. If.you invest in new axle stands, get the square base ons not the triangular type, they are more stable.

l bought a Halfords 3 ton bottle jack and it wouldn't go high enough to lift the Defender wheel off the ground.

Thanks everyone my dad just mentioned he has a 3 tonne jack which is great as it’ll save me spending £50 quid on one in Halfords! Got a rubber insert for a jack so it doesn’t damage the chassis so hope it fits if not can I just use wood? As I’m really worried about scratching my chassis or worse denting it while jacking up

Mine has a number dents in the chassis all from it meeting some of the terra very

firma around here. Jacking will not dent any defender chassis in half good nick.

Wood is always good, does two things, 1 stops damage and spreads the load, 2 stops things slipping

Thanks chaps, spent the whole afternoon pressure washing the underside, didn’t have any axle stand but I just put stacked up sleepers under the chassis incase the jack failed, back is killing me now! Funny thing is after inspection when I got home I missed a couple of small bits so got to get underneath tomorrow to make sure it’s all gone, then Monday the spraying of fluid film can start hopefully, the weather is pretty dry and windy which should help with the drying fingers crossed
