Hey all,
Not a serious issue, recently purchased a 2000, Defender 110 with a TD5 about 280K km on it. Runs great (in my amateur opinion), recently the weather just dropped to about 3 degress celsius. i drive it around all the time but my temp never reaches normal operation (halfway up the gauge) unless i am on the highway doing 110km/h for 30 mins.

is this normal? around the city it doesnt go higher than the Blue indicator square on the gauge even after i have been driving it for an hour?

I freeze my backside off since i cant run the heater!

Try to stop the fan with a rolled up newspaper 1 minute after you started the engine from cold... if it doesnt stop it means the viscous unit is stuck solid which affects warm up also probably the thermostat is stuck open too

If driven around at low revs, my TD5 takes quite a while to warm up on the gauge. If you have a fault code reader like a Nanocom, Lynx or similar, you can see the coolant temperature in Celsius, which can give you some reassurance that it's rising. At low revs, the heater seldom blows more than lukewarm, and you typically need a good blast to heat it up. The engineers who designed the TD5 engine did a pretty good job of managing heat, which is good for the engine, but less comfortable for the passengers in the winter.

That explains a lot Brown Thank you!

the Test proveed that the thermostat and viscous unit are operating properly!

thank you all for your assistance!

I have a 2005 TD5 110

The temperature gauge always reaches just below half, even in temperatures below freezing.
It can take a few miles in very cold weather, but it always gets there in the end. Once at just below half it never drops unless l turn off the engine.
Even in slow moving traffic with the heater on.

This was the same on our 2003 90 TD5 and our 2006 90 TD5
