Defender 110 TD5 or 2.4 TDCi?

Hi all,

I currently have a 2006 TD5 and need another one, but the budget will stretch to a slightly later 2.4 TDCi.

Are there any major differences between the two in terms of reliability, driveability, comfort etc?

My TD5 is bloody noisy at most speeds, particularly above 50mph so are the gear ratios etc. different on the 2.4?

I've found a couple of nice TD5's but wondering whether going with a later model would be best.

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Paul.

If I was you id go td5 and spend the little extra on getting a lower mileage one and perhaps getting the transfer gears upgraded to the 1.2 ratio rather than the standard 1.4, this will improve mpg and lessen the noise as the engine will be revving less. You could also spend a little more on some Noise Killer sound proofing, its made one hell of a difference in my td5 90, and still be below budget for the 2.4 of equal mileage. I really like the td5 engine in the defender. Just my opinion :)

Improve the TD5, I drove a Trannie engined Defender once and TD5 is just so much better.

Remap, Disco transfer box, sound proofing.

I have also seen that some later Defenders have been retro fitted with TD5s after the Trannie lump wore out
