Hello To all you Defender owners. I have just acquired my first Defender, a 300Tdi 110 CSW (ex military). The rear differential has significant play and results in a huge 'clunk' when moving off or on the overrun. Can anyone tell what the correct part is to replace it. Will a front or rear diff from a Range Rover or Disco fit? Is the diff different from a Defender 90 rear diff?

Many thanks, I am totally confused!!!

you have a salisbury diff ,not fitted to any other apart from 110 ,id check drive mem, bers and half shafts first ,often worn ,then if it is diff you can either find someone to fit fresh bearings and reset it or i could tell you how to do it or buy another diff and axle tube

Many thanks. Will check the prop shaft and half shafts first. Can the differential be rebuilt with basic home workshop tools? I tried to rebuild my Triumph TR6 differential, but I ended up needing a 10 Tonne press...

check drive members first ,then google aeu2615 seal 607181g outer pinion bearing ,607180g inner pinion bearing ,607107 crushable spacer,,607197g diff carrier bearing x2,if you use timken settings should be the same

Thanks for the advice. I have checked the half shafts and drive members, there was a lot of play. So much so that the previous owner had tried to bodge a repair by welding the two together. Have just ordered new half shafts and Terrafirma drive members, will see how the axle is with the new parts.
