Hello all....

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct section if not I apologize.

To the point, I have decided I want to do a little bit of travelling/long holiday I would like to experience some of the world before I am too settled in work etc for the rest of my life :( I also have a large love for land rovers so why not combine the two.. I am looking to get a Defender 110 country, I would of got one sooner but with already owning a car and what not its not been viable but now I'm ready.

I think I would like to travel around Europe to start off with.. Just wondering if any of you have any tips on choosing the correct landy and what sort of kit I will need etc.. camping in the woods for a few days is unfortunately the only real experience I have behind me.

Thank you all in advance.

Conor

Is it a 110 station wagon that you want to buy , as that has the County trim package?
If its europe , then a landrover is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a walnut . You would probably be better off with a decent van , and convert the inside . Prettywell anywhere this side of Mongolia has a full set of decent roads , so a 4wd isnt really needed. A van will give you more space , less fuel consumption, and the same or better comfort .

Correct - I agree a van would be more practical but I would like to explore the more scenic routes and such which a van won't be able to access, haven't decided on locations as of yet!

it's more of a want with a land rover too.. I would rather invest in one of them rather than a van either if the latter is a better option.

Thank you for the advise!

If you are mad keen on a landy , then if its only two of you traveling together then a 3 door version might be a better proposition , as station wagons are at a premium . what sort of budget are you thinking for the vehicle ? you want at minimum a 200tdi , and a 300 would be a bit better . If you are intending diy mechanic work then 300tdi is probably better than any other version as later is more ecu .

Afraid so, I haven't really set a budget just want to make sure I get the right one.. but then again I don't fancy spending 10k on one! I was thinking a 300tdi - I have read alot about them on here... so there's pretty much an instruction guide for anything on here!

Think he meant a 110 Van rather than a station wagon (with seats in the back)

You are going along the same thoughts as me, I eventually want to turn my 90 into an expedition vehicle for exploring.

Don't know if you have seen the Expedition tread under the forum section. Might be worth a look. Also we recently came back from a trip across Morocco, see link:
Land Rover Discovery 1 300TD, overland preparation and modifications: Day 9, I have decided this was day 9 on our Morocco 4x4 tour
One advantage of getting a Defender now is you can slowly get it together for the more serious trips. Everyone has their own demands required of their Defender. After the first trip you will know what set up you need. Be warned, when you have done it once you will want to go again.

I am very jealous, that blog is a very good read also I will be sure to finish that off... Makes me want to go even more :D

No I meant a Van not a defender hardtop :) . If youi are thinking 10K then buy a vehicle for 5K and use 5K to make sure its in tip top condition . Dont get sucked into buying a lot of bling. if you want a view of what you can do yourself have a look here
Making a ifting roof on a 110 - Expedition Portal ,
and you will find lots of similar stuff on here as well. Dont be afraid to ask questions, but you will need to be able to divine a consensus , as opinions can be very varied.

Buy a Defender! Sure a van would be more reliable, economical blah blah, but there's nothing cooler than a 110 SW kitted out for an expedition. You'll need to take more than just camping gear, you'll need your Haynes, comprehensive tool kit and spares! The sooner you get one the sooner you can get tinkering and learning what does what in a Defender!
